My Story
My paternal great-grandmother developed this family recipe. She would bake 120 dozen of these cookies to sell during the Christmas season to raise money for her church. It has been a Walter Family tradition for as long as I can remember to make sandtarts every Christmas and share them with all our friends and neighbors.
Recipe
Preparation Time: Dough must be refrigerated for 24 hours before being rolled out. Baking time is 3-5 minutes per tray of cookies.
Ingredients
4 Cups of Flour
3 Cups of Sugar
4 eggs (retain white of one egg to brush cookies)
1 ¼ Cup of Butter
1 Tsp of Vanilla Extract
Method
Beat butter and sugar together with mixer. Add vanilla before adding the eggs, one at a time. Add flour. Add more flour as necessary, until dough is not sticky. Refrigerate dough for 24 hours covered with a moist cloth.
Roll out dough to 1/8” thick. Use cookie cutters to shape cookies and brush cut-out cookies with egg white, sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mixture (1:3 ratio of cinnamon to granulated sugar) and then sprinkle with colored sprinkles to decorate.
Bake cookies at 350 F, ~3-5 minutes per tray depending on the thickness and size of the cookies.
Makes 20 dozen cookies.
